“Well, well, I see you two got everything up here.” Oliver inspected the boxes and other items lying in the lab near the time pod. “It’s time to get ready, Paulette.”

Paulette looked at Oliver with a frown on her face. “So soon?”

“Why, of course? I’ve waited a long time to do this,” Oliver said as he plucked his clothes off the pile and headed to the men’s bathroom to change.

Paulette grunted, picked up her clothes, and went to the women’s bathroom to change. She slid her arms into the white blouse and then pulled the dark-colored slacks on and tucked in the blouse. She put the dark-colored vest over her blouse. Looking in the mirror, she saw an out-of-style woman staring back at her. Her lips pursed, as she brushed her long brown hair, twisting it into a bun and pinning it in place. She left a few strands of hair in the front to accent her face. “There, that should do,” she said out loud. Paulette placed her ID badge in her purse. Dressed and ready to go on this misadventure of Oliver’s, she exited the bathroom and walked back.

Oliver stood there, dressed in a black suit and tie. He tapped his foot and looked at his wrist as if he had a watch. Paulette despised him even more. Somehow, she needed to stay safe and prevent him from doing more harm than he already had planned. She didn’t feel very confident in the outcome. She motioned with her arm as she said, “So, are we ready to enter that, and go to the past to screw it up?”

Oliver glared at her and slid his hand into his pants pocket, making her take a step back. “Yes, we are ready to go and change the past—to make a better future for all mankind.”

He walked over to inspect the supplies. She wondered what he was going to say next. “Okay, we need to get the other supplies into the storage area of the time pod. Come help me load these last remaining boxes.”

Paulette reluctantly bent down and grabbed a few lightweight boxes and followed Oliver to the back of the time pod. She was unaware until then that they had built storage into the pod. What a clever idea, she thought. When it was her turn, she placed her boxes in the storage area and returned to the front.

Paulette’s lips turned upward at the thought of Oliver not knowing that the pod didn’t have to be controlled by the computer. She enjoyed having some control over the situation. All he knew was that their destination and return information had been uploaded into the time pod.

She looked at Emma, who was at the computers ready to initiate their launch. Emma gave her a thumbs up and a slight smile and said, “Good luck out there.”

“Thanks, gonna try,” was all Paulette could think to say. She watched as Oliver crawled into the time pod and buckled in. She saw him point at her seat, indicating she needed to get in and strap down.
